just some very rough sketches today. I've been wanting to do some folk-lore/fairytale-ish art lately. This isn't really based off of any story in particular, but i really like the pose and the composition. My main problem here is I want some sort of concept, but don't know what. I played around with putting a city underwater, and had a few other ideas, but nothing that's jumping out at me. Any thoughts?

just some exercises

this isn't the project i'm currently working on or anything, but i've been doing little sketches like these lately. they do a good job of working out my hand, and allow me to indulge in the comforting act of just painting things that i enjoy. like wisteria leaves, swirly curly vines, and some bunting. :o)

the project that i AM seriously working on, which is a book cover, will also have some of the white gouache line work (much like the middle envelope). i like it, but we'll see if it ends up being a look that genuinely works.

Sign language and red birds

Hello! Sorry it's taken me so long to find this. I've been doing so much traveling and apartment hunting and gosh but this is the first chance I've had to catch up on everything I've been neglecting. You two have been posting some beautiful art here and it's making me so nostalgic for UArts and how inspiring it was coming to class each day.

I don't know if I showed these to you already, but here is the revised version of that piece I did for Phyllis and a piece I did for Meghan. Any critiques would be wonderful. I feel terrible that I haven't made any art all summer so hopefully this'll shake me up and get me working again.

A few more sketches today

Might end up doing something with the top one. Not sure what, though. Suggestions welcome.

postcard

Wel I ended up with some time to work on that postcard, and to answer your question, Sara, this is what I meant:

I'm also thinking about using a different font, since I'm still not sure if i like the simplicity of the current one. On one hand, it doesn't feel very interesting. On the other hand, I feel that overly elaborate text would take away from the image, which is the main point.

BAMAN

Glad to see this finally come to fruition. I suppose I'll put up a few things so that they have time to look impressive until Travis shows up.  Here's an image for what will hopefully become a postcard for my mom's bed and breakfast (a.k.a. my house.) I plan to surround this with some line-work and possibly some text.

And I know this is supposed to be a "crit wall" type deal, but since I don't have any other big projects, I'll just put up some sketches.  I hope that's okay.
I'm not sure why i chose to do a bunch of batman sketches this week, but I did.

So..enjoy that.

right, a "real" entry

jimmy. yes.

okay...i will start things off with an image that i completed the other night, after feeling the need to do something with a set of small sketches that i'd completed at work. here are the simple sketches, done in pencil and from life:

so i decided that a fabric pattern would be fun, and remembered that there is a website called bonbonkakku.com that hosts monthly fabric design contests. if your design is chosen, you receive much yardage of fabric printed in said design, and it will also become available in their shop. seems fun, although i haven't actually gone through and checked everything out thoroughly...we'll see.

after fiddling with illustrator, the basic pattern came out looking like this:

(full)

(superzoom detail)

of course, i live trace everything. but my love of the effect hasn't worn off yet, so please bear with me.

now, i know that you've both probably glanced at this already, and jimmy has even been so kind as to have said a couple of things about it, but would you mind, for old time's sake, pointing out a strength and a weakness?

i'll have something new (and hopefully a bit more substantial) soon.

Sadly

Dear Sara,
I want to thank you for the wonderful work you did in stitching the logo for the group blog. I have received many compliments regarding how beautifully it was done.

P.S. Sadly, the logo was stolen by hackers and is now used in fraudulent promotions for "free ringtones" on websites of questionable repute.

the preliminary effort

so i've set it up...at least as far as my abilities have allowed.
i've created a collective email address through gmail, so that we might all have administrative permissions over the blog, but if you two think that it's a good idea, i could just send author invitations to both of your gmail accounts.

we'll talk about the logo later. it pains me too much at the moment. :oP
